Appearance: light gold-green. Nose: mineral first nose – much more mineral in fact than the regular Fumé Blanc – followed up by passion fruit, peach and a touch of citrus (lemon). Oak is relatively subtle and very well-integrated here. Palate: lively medium-high acidity, savoury, mineral and slightly fruity flavours on the palate with decent length and subtle oak. Conclusion: from the Tokalon Vineyard, this is one of the best examples of Fumé Blanc I’ve had. Although I’m not a big fan of this wine personally, it is very well-made. Certainly the vogue for producing heftily oaked Sauvignons – which needed the oak because the too warm conditions in Napa usually ruined what aromatics the grape can confer – seems to be on the wane. Good.
