Note: This wine was tasted blind at Franciscan Estate, Napa Valley as part of a tasting of wines from the Icon Estates portfolio (owned by Constellation): Appearance: light-medium green with slight spritz and noticeable legs. Nose: very green fruit first nose – presented more like Sauvignon Blanc than Pinot Gris initially. Then lusher fruit comes through (I had wondered if this was a Sauvignon-Semillon blend). Somehow the pear fruit of Pinot Gris was missing, but it’s a lively nose certainly. Palate: medium-high acidity, medium bodied and quite high alcohol – turns out to be 13.5%. Quite good length. Conclusion: this was not a style of Pinot Gris I recognized (obviously New Zealand is experimenting with the grape and offers everything from bone dry to off-dry styles). Good. Drink now.
